An Island of Contrasts
Without question, Barbados is sleek and modern in many ways, yet clearly still attached to the customs and traditions of England. Barbados has been a self-governing country since 1639, but did not become formally independent from Britain until 1966. It is a member of the British Commonwealth and its British heritage is evident in Barbadian (Bajan) customs, as well as the names of streets and areas throughout the island. In short, Barbados is a country as complex and diverse as any you will find. In an attempt to know and understand it, the newcomer to Barbados has an ally - it’s size. It measures a brief 21 miles from top to bottom and only 14 miles wide.
